But, how do you send wax seals safely through the post system?

That being said, there are some important things to consider when sending wax sealed envelopes. Let's explore how to ensure that your seals arrive safely:
In This Article
Do Wax Seals Break In The Mail?
Wax seals made from modern sealing wax will not break in the mail. The key is to make sure your sealing wax is flexible, as this will add the durability required to survive being mailed.
In days of old letters were hand carried and a wax seal was meant to keep the content confidential. When someone received their message, they were able to break the seal and be confident no one else read their mail.
This break-ability is a problem when going through the post system. Wax seals create a heartfelt moment by communicating your sentiments through beautiful design, and they need to be intact to do this.
Imagine a wax seal arriving broken or cracked, talk about a real buzz kill!
make sure your sealing wax is made from a modern and flexible formula. Traditional formula sealing waxes will not hold up in the mail. Most wax sticks with a wick (or not in glue gun format) are made from a traditional formula as modern sealing waxes won't melt properly in an open flame.
How Do I Mail Wax Sealed Envelopes?
When sending your wax seals through the mail, there are 3 key things to know to make sure your seals arrive intact.
Paying careful attention to where your wax seal is placed, the method you are mailing, and how your wax seal adheres to the envelope will ensure an entirely mail friendly experience.
Here are 3 questions you must answer for mailing safety:
What is the safest placement of a wax seal for mailing?
Placing a wax seal on the outer of an envelope is generally safe for mailing. There is a slight chance for damage to be caused by modern sorting machines, however this will affect less than 1/100 envelopes sent.
If you want your seals to be guaranteed to arrive 100% intact, we recommend placing your envelope in a larger envelope to add protection, or incorporate your wax seal into the design of your stationery. We have a guide on how to use wax seals with ribbon and twine as a belly band.
What method of mailing is best for wax seals
We recommend hand-canceling whenever you are sending wax seals through the mail. This is a brilliant way to protect your wax seals from tearing as electronic canceling machines can cause damage. We generally recommend hand-canceling anything pretty through the post as you will avoid an unsightly digital print bar across the top of your envelope.
Some post offices may required you to pay a hand-canceling fee for intricate mail, this charge will be around $0.21 USD/envelope.
The bottom line: When it comes to pretty paper we always recommend hand-canceling.
What is the best way to adhere a wax seal to an envelope?
If you are using pre-made wax seals, make sure the adhesive has a strong hold! All our wax seals come standard with professional grade adhesive that will hold up in the mail. If your wax seals are made using craft or resealable adhesive we do not recommend placing on the outside of an envelope.
The bottom line: Stamp and send your invitations or make sure you are using a strong adhesive if you are attaching pre-made wax seals.
Does It Cost More To Send Wax Sealed Envelopes In The Mail?
An envelope with a wax seal on the outer-side may require being hand-canceled (this is up to your local post office). however we strongly recommend hand-canceling any stationery you've invested in, as this is the best way to ensure it arrives beautifully!
With USPS hand-canceling usually costs around $0.21 per envelope.
Wax seals do add some weight to invitations however, not significant amount at all. Each wax seal weights 0.02oz which is less than a thousandth of a pound!
So if you are being charged a fee for going over 1lb, there is a good chance it is not because of your wax seals.
The bottom line: Some Post Offices may require you to hand-cancel your envelopes, which we recommend to do anyway. This should cost around $0.21 per envelope.
Will Wax Seals Melt In The Mail?
Very rarely will wax seals melt in the mail. However, it can happen!
The only instances we've had were a customers wax seals melted was during a heat wave in the hotter parts of the world. Typically your wax seals will stay solid and beautiful!
The bottom line: Unless you are cooking omelets on the pavement your wax seals will not melt in the mail!
